Chelsea target Diego Costa has been named La Liga’s best Spanish-American footballer of the year following a fabulous campaign in the Spanish capital.
Chelsea target Diego Costa’s season just seems to be getting better and better after the Brazilian-born striker has been named La Liga’s best Spanish-American footballer of the year.
The 25-year-old striker has had a season to remember in the Spanish capital, as his 27 league goals in 34 starts have helped the club win their first La Liga title since 1996.
Diego Costa’s fabulous campaign also stretches to helping the team to the Champions League final where they meet city-rivals Real Madrid next Saturday, and his first international call-up to the Spanish squad, paving the way for his inclusion into Vicente Del Bosque’s World Cup squad.
The Atletico Madrid striker’s memorable campaign hasn’t gone without notice, and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has earmarked the star as a summer signing for the Blues.
Reports in Spain last month suggested that Chelsea have a €60m agreement to sign Diego Costa ahead of next season, although such reports have yet to be confirmed or denied.
With Atletico Madrid eyeing up strikers Angel Correa, Carlos Bacca and possibly Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, however, it appears the club are planning for a future without their talisman.

Before any possible move to West London, Diego Costa will take heart from the recognition received for such a good season for the Rojiblancos. According to Eurosport, Atletico Madrid’s top goalscorer has held off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win La Liga’s prestigious Spanish-American Player of the Year award in its 24th edition.
In achieving the award, he becomes the first Brazilian-born player since Ronaldinho in 2004 to claim the prize and the first Atletico Madrid player since Sergio Aguero in 2008.
